How much does a Kitchen cost?
“How much does a kitchen cost” or “How much do I need to spend to get the kitchen I want”? I get asked these questions all the time and wish there was an easy answer – say £10k or £30k. But, it’s rarely a straightforward question so it’s difficult to give a straightforward answer especially if you want to be sure you are giving an accurate response.
Firstly, you need to determine what costs are in and which aren’t when you ask the question and you do your sums – do you include the cost of installation, appliances, tiling, or even removing the old kitchen and taking down a wall? And what about VAT – in or out?
Secondly, you need a good idea of the design, layout and type of cabinetry as this can affect the price (ie drawer units are more expensive than cabinets and a pantry created with a stud wall and simple shelves will be a very different price than a cabinet pantry will rollout drawers and lights that come on when the doors open). And, internal extras like cutlery trays and swivel racks in corner units can really bump up the price.
There are lots of decisions to take between deciding to do a kitchen project and that first dinner party when you show off the finished result. Choice of worktop and whether you include luxury features like a boiling water tap or built in coffee machine can really impact the budget.
Quotes from kitchen companies vary – sometimes they will be low and you’ll get lured in only to find that the figure climbs steeply down the road once you include all the necessary items. Others will quote with all the bells and whistles which will send you running with a tight grip on your wallet. Most companies should be able to get you a rough idea of cost once you’ve had a chat and can give an idea of what you are looking for.
Let’s face it, all of us have a budget that usually falls a bit short of our dream wish list so ideally you’ll work with a kitchen company that will help you make the compromises that work for you and create a fabulous project within the amount you want to spend.
To help, we’ve prepared a handy checklist that you can download. It gives you all the categories you need to consider so you can be sure you haven’t forgotten anything and can compare quotes.
