The Friends Kitchen

Friends was an iconic American television sitcom. The show originally which ran from 1994 – 2004 though reruns continue to be shown around the world. Most of the episodes had scenes that were shot in the Manhattan apartment of Monica, one of six friends featured in the show.

There’s lots to learn from the colourful the set.  The kitchen area is compact and defined with shelving at both ends and features the classic triangle which closely links 3 important parts of a kitchen – the sink, the fridge and the cooker. A tight classic triangle works perfectly when there is one person cooking – ideal for Monica who was a professional chef (and a bit of a control freak). There’s space at the kitchen table for someone to help with the prep.  The kitchen table can be extended to sit lots of people – remember those Thanksgiving episodes?

Kitchen Style

The kitchen is open to the lounge giving a sociable layout though with zoned areas – cooking, prep and hanging out in the lounge. The sofa faces into the lounge creating a separation between the two spaces.

The set designer wanted an ‘eclectic flea market’ feel so the chairs were changed often as were all the plates, cups etc on the open shelving.  Even the view out the window changed. The fridge was hooked up and held snacks for the cast and crew.
